It's been nearly two weeks since COVID-19 vaccines were first administered in Hamilton County. Many will remember one of the CHI Memorial nurses fainted after receiving the vaccine. Since then, misinformation, conspiracy theories and rumors have swirled on social media.
Channel 3 fact checked those claims and is putting the rumors to rest.
Channel 3 was there live and witnessed Tiffany Dover receive the vaccine and the moments after. We spoke with Dover after she fainted, and she told us she has an overactive vagal response and is known to faint after shots.
CHI Memorial tells Channel 3 she's fine.
On December 17, Hamilton County administered their first doses of the COVID-19 vaccine. Among the first in the Tennessee Valley to receive one was CHI Memorial critical care unit nurse, Tiffany Dover.
"Really, I'm sorry, I'm feeling really dizzy. I'm sorry,” Dover said as she passed out.
Channel 3 was live on Facebook when Dover fainted while discussing the vaccine she received ten minutes prior.
The video has since been shared around the world. So have false claims that Dover passed away or has disappeared.
Fake accounts have been set up to spread misinformation.
In fact, Dover spoke to us later about fainting, saying it was a common occurrence for her.
"I have a history of having an overactive vagal response and with that, if I have pain from anything, hangnail or if I stub my toe, I can just pass out,” she told Channel 3.
CHI Memorial has also received inquiries from all over the world asking about Dover.
Four days after the incident, they posted this video on their Facebook page of Dover with other staff members showing their support of her and the COVID-19 vaccine.
Once again, false claims spiraled, some claiming on social media the woman in the video was not Dover.
The hospital issued a statement confirming it was Tiffany Dover in the video.
A spokesperson for CHI Memorial says Dover is doing fine, but does not want to do any additional interviews.
"I feel fine now and the pain in my arm is very minimal,” she said.
Tiffany Dover also told Channel 3, she has no regrets about taking the vaccine.
CHI Memorial released the following statement about the incident:
“We appreciate the ongoing concern by the community and media. Tiffany and CHI Memorial issued a current video and photograph , on Dec. 21, 2020, of her at the hospital surrounded by nursing leaders, including our Chief Nurse Executive, who support her. Our efforts must now turn to caring for an ever growing number of people in our community hospitalized with COVID-19 and vaccinating our caregivers and support staff. We will not be putting out any additional statements or holding any additional interviews concerning this incident. For concerns related to the vaccine, we recommend you speak with your physician or visit www.cdc.gov and https://www.cdc.gov/coronavirus/2019-ncov/vaccines/faq.html. ”
