UPDATE: A Ringgold woman announced her candidacy for Georgia’s 14th Congressional District seat for which she will challenge Rep. Marjorie Taylor Greene in 2022.
Holly McCormack, 36 and a Democrat, launched her campaign just two months into Greene’s first term.
Since the U.S. House of Representatives created the 14th Congressional District in Georgia in 2010, there has never been a Democrat in the seat.
McCormack told Channel 3 she got into the race for people who feel like they have been overlooked and hoped to put forth better leadership.
"You can't win if you don't run," she said.
The wife and mother of two has lived with her family in Ringgold for several years but grew up in Rossville and in Chattanooga where she also owns a business.
Her interest in public service has grown through her career as a small business owner in the insurance industry, especially during an eventful 2020.
''I was heart-broken repeatedly. Over and over and then I just dug in. I dug into things that we weren't taught. We didn't have our civics lesson yet, we do now," McCormack said.
She said issues that have stood out to her are social justice-related and affordable healthcare after the state's response to the COVID-19 pandemic.
She added that she's never met Greene in person, but said the current congresswoman's actions, outbursts and presence on social media do not reflect the people of Northwest Georgia.
"It is the absolute lack of empathy and kindness,” McCormack added.
Here is a statement from Greene's communication team in response to McCormack's announcement:
"The 14th district issued a mandate on November 3rd by overwhelmingly voting for President Trump and Congresswoman Greene. She is focused on delivering on her “America First” agenda for the people of Northwest Georgia."
McCormack will launch a listening tour where she hopes to hear from community members in March.
